Beach Day
“Listen everyone”, Mr. Martin yelled, clapping his hands together. “Tomorrow is beach day. Bring your goggles, bathing suits, flip-flops, towels, and whatever else you want, because we will be on the beach from 8 AM to 5 PM. So be prepared.” Cally looked at Bean. Bean looked at Cally. They smiled. They knew what they were going to do every single time they went to the beach – dig for crabs. Once they find a small hole, they start digging for crabs. For the last three years, they had been successful. This year again, they will be successful, yet again. As soon as Cally and Bean arrived home, they started packing. Towel, bathing suit, shovel, bucket, sunglasses, and most importantly, lunch.
As soon as they woke up the next morning, they jumped out of bed, got all dressed up and pulled on their bag and raced each other to school, the usual. They were sweating by the time they got to school, but were excited to go to the beach. Today, Cally had brought in Poogy because Poogy always had a blast at the beach. Today, Mr. Martin made an exception. Just because it was the beach. Everyone hopped on the bus and the bus pulled away.
At the beach
They hopped off the bus and took off for the sand. They straightened out their blanket, put their sunglasses on and ran around the beach looking for crab holes. “Found One!” yelled Cally screaming across the beach. Bean immediately ran towards her and started digging. “It’s kind of dark with sunglasses,” Cally said as she took her sunglasses off and laid them down next to her. They dug for five more minutes but didn’t find anything. They pushed all the sand back that they had scooped out and dashed off looking for more holes. Something strange was happening with Poogy. Poogy sat next to the hole they had just dug and was sniffing around and barked for them to come back. “That’s weird,” Cally said. “Poogy never barks, does she?” “Never”, said Bean. They were shocked and worried about what was happening with Poogy.
They stood opposite of Poogy, glaring at her. “What,” said Cally. “What do you want? We already checked this area and there’s nothing here OK?”. Cally was about to walk away when she realized that she didn’t have her sunglasses. “Uh oh Bean. Do you know where my sunglasses are?” “Uh, no.” Cally started frantically running around the beach asking everyone if they had found it. Meanwhile, Poogy was digging a hole where they just dug. Bean watched. Suddenly Poogy found something.
