Overdue Essay
On a Monday morning, Cally was focusing so hard on her essay that was due the previous week that she didn’t realize how noisy it was in the classroom until – “Quiet! Don’t get too excited about this school trip, everyone.” Cally had no idea what the teacher was talking about, but she needed this essay handed in by tomorrow so she proceeded to write her essay. On the way home she rushed by Bean and said, “Would you mind coming over to my house and wash Poogy for me? I have to finish this essay.” “OK!” Bean called. But Cally was already in her tower.
When Bean arrived at Cally’s house, she took Poogy to the bathroom and started washing her. When she was finished, she attempted to tell Cally something, “Oh, before I forget, the teacher said you need to bring your-“ But Bean was interrupted, “Thanks for the help! I need to focus, so see you tomorrow!” Cally lifted a hand and waved. “Fine,” Bean said annoyed. Bean walked around Cally’s room looking for something. Then she headed out the door.
Preparing for Pisa
The next day Cally gave Mr. Martin her finished essay. “Thank you,” he said with one eyebrow raised as he put it on his table. As Cally sat down at her desk, Mr. Martin said to the class, “Remember I need all of your passports in by Friday or you will not be able to come with us on the one-week trip to Pisa. Today I will also be handing out things that you need to bring.” He walked around the room handing everyone a sheet of paper with a list of items to bring. When class finished, Cally met Bean outside. “This is so exciting! Is that what you were trying to tell me yesterday?” Cally said as she read the list. “No… I was trying to tell-“ “Sorry I have to start preparing right now. Bye.” And Cally ran off again.
When Cally returned home, she started packing her clothes in a luggage case. ‘What about Poogy?’ Cally thought. She knocked on her neighbor Frank’s door and explained how she needed him to take care of Poogy on Friday. When she walked back into her apartment she remembered about her passport. She walked over to the table where she always put it, but it was not there.
The Missing Passport
“NOOO!” Cally screamed at the top of her lungs. She looked under the bed, in her bag and even in the drawers, but she still could not find it. “No, no, no!” Cally said slapping her face and her hands. “Bean is going to the Leaning Tower of Pisa while I have to stay here in this boring country and get a new passport. Hmph.” Cally drooped to the bathroom to take a shower. When she came out, she flopped on her bed and buried her head in her pillow.
The next day at school, Mr. Martin was angry at Cally for being late, but she didn’t care. “Why are you late?” Mr. Martin spat at Cally. “I don’t know, and I don’t care,” Cally said sluggishly. All she wanted was her passport. Mr. Martin said, “Good morning class! Today is Wednesday and I will now read the people who have already handed in their passports. Bean, Max, Jacob, Betty, Christen, Hal and finally Cally!”
A Welcome Surprise
Cally could not believe her ears. She shook her head. “I repeat Bean, Max, Jacob, Betty, Christen, Hal and Cally have all handed in their passport so if you did not hear your name, make sure you hand it in by Friday,” Mr. Martin said. Cally still could not believe her ears so she stood up and raised her hand. “Yes Cally?” Mr. Martin said pointing to her. “Excuse me but… did you say my name?” Cally asked with her eyes almost popping out of her head and her ears about to blow up. “Yes I did.” Cally’s jaw dropped as she sat back down. ‘How is this possible?’ Cally thought. ‘I didn’t even give it to any-‘ “Uh, excuse me Cally. It’s time to start Writing class. So if you could pay attention…” Mr. Martin said with his eyebrows lowered. “Oh uh yes, yes, I mean… yes uh… yes, yes,” Cally said stunned.
After the bell rang, Cally just stared at the floor while walking home. ‘How oh how could th-‘ her thoughts were interrupted again by a sound of giggling. “Hey what’s so funny?” Cally spat without thinking. She turned her head to find Bean with her hand on her mouth. “Hi Heh, heh, …uh…um…” Bean couldn’t stand it any longer “Bwa hahahahahahahahaha!”
The Look
Cally made an angry face at her. “Sorry. I just thought it was so funny that you never figured it out,” Bean apologized. “When you were writing your essay, and told me to leave, I knew you would never remember to bring your passport. So I handed it in for you.” “Why you… you could have just told me you were taking it. It’s a passport,” Cally said grumpily. “But you wouldn’t listen!” Bean shot back. “Whatever. Problem solved. It doesn’t matter anymore,” Cally said. “Hey, want to come over to my house and play?” Cally asked. “There’s no homework for the week.” “Alright!” Bean shouted excitedly.
When they arrived at Cally’s house, Cally kept an eye on Bean wherever
she went. “Why are you looking at me like that?” Bean asked scared out
of her mind. “Oh nothing. I’m just making sure' that you don't try to
steal’ my stuff again,” Cally joked.
